Wind velocity observation with a CW Doppler radar

چکیده
We study the problem of gathering information about wind velocity from continuous-wave clear-air Doppler radar measurements. The radar is assumed to be a monostatic fixed-frequency Doppler radar, and the wind velocity as well as the reflectivity are modeled as random fields with statistical parameters depending on the altitude. We seek to reconstruct the hodograph curve of the wind profile, i.e., the projection of the wind velocity profile to the ground plane. We show that under certain assumptions of the wind field, the problem reduces to a well-known problem occurring in classical X-ray tomography. Numerical simulations based on the use of X-ray inversion methods are presented.

Variational Pseudo-Multiple-Doppler Wind Retrieval in the Vertical Plane for Ground-Based Mobile Radar Data
A variational procedure is developed that utilizes mobile ground-based range–height indicator (RHI) Doppler radar velocity data for the synthesis of two-dimensional, RHI plane wind vectors. The radial component winds are obtained with the radar platform in motion, a data collection strategy referred to as the rolling RHI technique. Using the assumption of stationarity—standard to any pseudo-mul...
متن کاملBackground Error Covariance Functions for Vector Wind Analyses Using Doppler Radar Radial-Velocity Observations
A two-dimensional form of cross-covariance function between the radar radialand tangential-components (with respect to the direction of radar beam) of background wind errors is derived. Like the previously derived auto-covariance function for the radial-component, this cross-covariance function is homogeneous but non-isotropic in the horizontal. The autoand cross-covariance functions are used w...

متن کامل7r.7 Simultaneous Wind Velocity Estimation and Dual-polarization Measurements of Precipitation and Clouds by an S-band Profiler
The Transportable Atmospheric RAdar (TARA) is an S-band FM-CW profiler that is located at Cabauw, The Netherlands. It is a part of European Union sponsored CESAR Observatory, Russchenberg et al. (2005). The TARA measurements can be carried out in single polarization mode, alternating polarization mode and/or wind measurement mode, that employs two offset beams. Simultaneous use of alternating p...
متن کاملTarget Tracking in MIMO Radar Systems Using Velocity Vector
The superiority of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars over conventional radars has been recently shown in many aspects. These radars consist of many transmitters and receivers located far from each other. In this scenario, the MIMO radar is able to observe the targets from different directions. One of the advantages of these radars is exploitation of Doppler frequencies from different...
